This coolant level sensor fits in the expansion tank of all 1983-91 watercooled Vanagons. Fit note: The late-model sensor utilizes a plastic connector. If yours has a rubber boot, you'll need the early-model sensor. Please make your selection in the drop-down menu.

These VW-designed level sensors are very reliable and affordable. When installed properly and with care, they work great!

Because of the size of the hole it fits, it necessarily have a very large hex section that is there so you can screw it in. But that doesn’t mean they should be tightened in a LARGE way! Also, there is a parting line down the middle of these sensors, where the two halves of the mold they were made in, come together. A little bit of sealant in this area is a good Idea.

To install:

Pull off the O-ring
Dab a very small amount of silicone or urethane sealant on the parting line, both sides.
Put the O-ring back on
Squirt the O-ring with soapy water
Get the sensor started in the threads by hand
Using a socket of the correct size, finish installing the sensor by hand (no rachet required!) until the hex part of the sensor bottoms out on the tank, and then STOP!
