Subject: Restore my 87 Westy>>

We recently acquired a 1987 Volkswagon Vanagon Tranporter - camper with pop-up. It is in good shape as far as we can tell, although refurbishment is something we are thinking about. We are located in Camp Hill, PA. We found your site very interesting and we are wondering what the cost would be to ship this vehicle to you from here. Are there shippers you'd recommend? Here is a wish list: it would be nice if it was repainted, at least the top needs to be painted for sure. I tried to clean the interior, but there are still stains on the seats--would be nice if looked new :0) Needs new bumpers, seals around poptop, and seals around windows and doors? New popup hatch/window in roof, new poptop tent -- unless this was fixable? Torn screen -- could be some other issues, entertainment pkg? (does this include a good stereo and speakers)? Then we'd probably need a second battery (maybe then solar?), not sure if the refrig, stove or heat works, but it probably does (afraid of the propane tank). Believe it needs better brakes and headlights, too. We haven't been able to get the seats to swivel? Apparently we are missing the two tables (behind the front seat and another further back), still having trouble with the AC -- tried to have this fixed, and the garage says it's probably the compressor. Possibly a trailer hitch (for a bike rack). As far as mechanical items -- it's hard for us to know -- we'd just like it reliable for weekend trips and camping. Has anyone ever requested a dog seat (between the 2 front seats)? We have a standard poodle that likes to ride shotgun and we haven't found anything yet that works. :0)
Thanks!

NO PROBLEM!

She sent her beloved Westy here all the way from Pennsylvania. We were quite skeptical it would be a worthy candidate for restoration. I mean, everyone in the northeast says "no rust, never driven in winter, heated garage," yada, yada, yada. Well, it turns out Kiz was not kidding. Her Westy was indeed a very worthy candidate!

This is what she got done:

• Fuel and cooling systems gone through
• Major service performed
• New clutch
• Full page of reliability enhancing items
• Suspension, brakes, and steering addressed as needed
• Bigger front brakes installed
• AC system made operational (but don't get too excited, Kiz!)
• New Bilstein shocks and 16" wheel package
• Fresh GoWesty transaxle with 48/48 warranty
• Fresh clutch and rebuilt shifter system
• Body partially disassembled
• Rust and body imperfections addressed
• Nose and top repainted back to the original color, including pop-top and luggage rack
• Top surface of top and luggage rack painted bright silver to reflect the sun
• GoWesty black texture treatment around lower body line
• GoWesty plate steel bumpers, rear with integral hitch
• Lots of trim parts, powder coating, super thorough detail
• New LP tank
• High powered headlight system
• New 100% acrylic, three-window pop-top tent
• Nice stereo with sub-woofer, hands-free cell and iPod interface
• Drop-down DVD player
• GoWesty 3-battery auxiliary power system
• 50 watt quick release solar panel system
• All-elelctric Engel freezer/fridge
• Nice floor mats throughout
• New OEM VW South Africa black leather steering wheel
• Yakima roof racks
• Yakima LoadWarrior cargo basket
• Power mirrors (not powered, though)

And more...

Kiz has agreed to act as a reference, and can be reached at: kiz62@comcast.net.

The first photo below is almost a perfect before/after shot! Right when we completed Kiz's Vanagon, another one came in that was almost identical (pre-GoWesty treatment, of course). It was too good not to resist snapping a few shots!
