Description:

Here is a classic example of one of the typical Syncro Westys out there: a1990 Syncro Westy with only 116K miles on it. When the owner of this vehicle first called, he was thinking he would "settle" for as little as $20,000 for it, but he "really thought, based on what we are getting for them," that it was really worth around $25K. He swore up and down that it had never been in an accident, that he had owned it since almost new, having purchased it in 1992 with only 10K miles on it.

Well, he was half right. It definitely is not rusty and it is definitely unmolested... but no accidents? Not quite. A quick CARFAX report revealed an "impact with large animal, drivers side, front" in 1991. So when it showed up, we weren't surprised to see the nose and left side had all been repainted. The paint on the nose and left door is peeling (see photos). The rest of the paint is original and in good condition. In fact, the body is totally functional, the door closes just fine, and the interior is super nice, too. But, no way was this Syncro Westy worth $25K... We told him there were many on the market for that price, and more. And that I had seen some in worse shape that folks were asking over $25k. The reality is he could probably put it on ebay and get what he wanted, but it still was not worth it.

Long story short, he was an honest guy, did not want to rip anyone off. We ended up buying it for $12,000, which was a fair price. We are going to mark that up 20%, so the price of this one starts at a very reasonable $14,400, over $10k less than what way worse ones are fetching...

No: We will not sell it as is, please don't ask, that's not the way we roll. It is not in your our our best interests to assume a 18 year old vehicle is "good to go" with a simple detail and oil change....

Truth be told, the body is straight enough to run as-is. However, to be really nice all the paint from the right front corner to the left rear needs to be stripped, the body fixed right, and repainted. The price listed DOES NOT include that. We will leave that decision to the ultimate buyer. This Syncro is perfect for the person interested in ALL the performance, but not interested in a winning a beauty contest...

This is one of seven vehicles we took on a 2500 mile trip in Baja over the past winter. In preparation for that trip, we did:

Cooling, fuel, electrical systems all gone through thoroughly
GoWesty super duper ultra major maintenance service
-All maintenance items back to zero miles
GoWesty progressive rate suspension springs with 2" lift
New Old Man Emu shocks all around
16" alloy wheel package with 225/70-16 BFG tires
New GoWesty plate steel bumpers, rear with integral hitch
GoWesty Skid plate in place of low hanging spare tire and carrier
Collapsible spare tire and portable compressor for emergency use
Over $2700 worth of "just in case" preemptive reliability enhancing items
GoWesty deluxe 2nd battery system
Nice stereo upgrade with iPOD interface
CB radio system
High powered headlight system
Keyless entry system
New brakes all around
Fresh clutch and hydraulic operating system
Fresh front differential and transaxle, with
-5.43 final drive ratios front and rear--12% lower than original
-Solid shaft instead of viscous coupler up front
-Decoupler added to transaxle
-Syncro locking differentials front and rear

So this Syncro is the the latest member of the triple knob club. Instead of just one knob on the dash to lock the rear wheels to each other ("rear locker"), this Syncro has three: One to lock the front and rear axles together (4WD), and one to lock the two front wheels together (front locker). With all knobs in, all lights off, this Syncro is just like a 2WD: No binding, best MPG. Pull all three and this guy is a venerable bill goat! And, it has been pre-tested for you satisfaction! Plus, all of the above work was done at our old labor rate, which was $10/hr cheaper than it is now...

The price listed will includes all of that stuff, plus the following, none of which has been done yet:

Fresh GoWesty 2.4 liter engine
GoWesty super duper ultra thorough detail inside and out
-everything that is supposed to be there is there
-everything that is there works
Goofy and unreliable power window switches moved to dash mounted ones
Black texture treatment all around the bottom
Frig update
New LP tank assembly
AUL extended warranty (www.aulcorp.com)
-"ESTATE" bumper to bumper coverage
-Zero deductible
-36 month/36,000 mile term
-Good anywhere in the USA or Canada
-Good at any independent garage or VW dealer

So, this guy will come with all fresh rubber, nicely detailed inside and out.

If you want a late model Syncro for a decent price, but that is not necessarily a show stopper, this is the one. Even with a fresh 2.4, this Syncro Westy comes in under $60k....and with THREE knobs, 5.43's. lifted: FUN FUN FUN!

Tempting, isn't it?
